An Even Start – National Tuition Program is one of a range of strategies to assist students who are not making satisfactory progress in literacy and numeracy. On 7 October 2008, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, Minister for Education agreed to extend tuition delivery under An Even Start – National Tuition Program. This extension is intended to give all registered students the opportunity to complete the program. The Department is currently working with State and Territory education authorities and the Private Tuition Coordinator regarding the delivery and continued support of the program.
.An Even Start – National Tuition Program provides $700 worth (a minimum of 12 hours) of tuition in reading, writing or numeracy for eligible students.

Tuition is personalised to meet the needs of eligible students, and may be delivered in a range of ways including:
- One-to-one;
- Small group – maximum of 5 students per group; or
- On-line.
Tuition includes a pre- and post-tuition assessment (of up to one hour). The pre-tuition assessment will help the tutor design an individual tuition plan for each child. The post-tuition assessment, conducted in the final tuition session, will measure each child’s progress.
