What's new to An Even StartAn Even Start program has been extended to June 2009. For more details see the Announcements page.

Literacy and numeracy skills are essential for progressing satisfactorily in school and lead to better employment opportunities. An Even Start – National Tuition Program aims to help you support your child in gaining these important foundation skills. Your involvement with your child’s tuition will play an important role in the successful delivery of the program.

An Even Start – National Tuition Program has been extended to give all registered students who did not meet 2007 national benchmarks in reading, writing or numeracy in years 3, 5 and 7 the opportunity to complete the program.

Eligible students are able to receive $700 worth (a minimum of 12 hours) of tuition in reading, writing or numeracy. Parents/caregivers are able to choose from:

Tuition includes a pre- and post-tuition assessment (of up to one hour). The pre-tuition assessment helps the tutor design an individual tuition plan for each child. The post-tuition assessment, conducted in the final tuition session, will measure each child’s progress. Tuition may be delivered in a range of ways including:

  • One-to-one;

  • Small group – maximum of 5 students per group; or

  • On-line.

Parents/caregivers of eligible students received a letter during term 1 2008 which includes information on how to register their child for tuition.
